Words Have Power: 3 Daily Habits That Will Transform Your Life

Throughout my life I have heard the phrase words have power more times than I can remember. Over the years it has become more than just something people say. It has become a truth that shaped the direction of my life.

At sixteen I faced a spinal cord injury that changed everything.

In that moment I had a choice. I could tell myself that my life was over or I could choose to believe that I was saved for a reason and that my story was not finished.

I chose the second path, but that does not mean I never have hard days. On difficult mornings I lean heavily on the strength of positive self-talk and the reminder that life is a gift even when it is challenging.

Over time I have developed three habits that continue to lift me emotionally, spiritually and mentally.

One: Begin Your Day with Gratitude

Each morning, I sit in stillness and speak words of gratitude out loud.

I name the big things, the small things and everything in between. I thank God for my little house, for meaningful conversations, for the people I love and even for lessons learned the day before.

Gratitude is not always easy. In the hard seasons I sometimes have to pause and search for something to appreciate, but this intentional practice has completely transformed my mornings.

It has created a sense of joy, positivity and deep blessing in my life that carries me through each day.

Two: Speak Affirmations Rooted in Faith

I do not claim to know every scripture by heart, but I do know the guiding principles that anchor my faith. I use those principles as a foundation to speak life into others and myself.

One of my favorite moments each day is spending time with my son Waylon before he goes to bed. Every night I tell him, You are smart, handsome and so funny. I am so proud of you and I am thankful you are my son. As I speak those words, I see his smile widen and his confidence grow. The more I affirm him, the stronger our bond becomes.

Words truly have the power to shape the heart and future of yourself and others.

Repeating them daily is a practice you will never regret.

Three: Surrender Your Worries

This is the habit that challenges me the most.

I have always struggled with the desire to control outcomes, but life has shown me again and again that surrender opens doors I could never open on my own.

After my car accident the doctors did not expect me to survive. When I prayed and surrendered my future to God I experienced what doctors later called a miraculous healing. Even with that miracle in my past I still find myself worrying at times. I have learned, that it is simply part of being human.

Now, I remind myself daily to let go by saying out loud, I give everything and everyone to you God.

Speaking those words helps me release the weight I tend to carry on my own. I still have worries, but I no longer carry them alone. God carries them with me.

A Gentle Invitation

Starting today, pay attention to the words you speak. Do they reflect the life you want to live and the beliefs that guide you?

If not, try incorporating one or more of these practices into your daily routine. You may be surprised by how much lighter life begins to feel.

Remember, your words have power. Use them to lift yourself, to lift others and to create the life your heart is reaching for.
